On the Job

August 18, 2007

Friends of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad volunteers painted the outside deck of the historic Santa Maria Valley Railroad freight depot on Saturday, August 18, 2007. Board member Kevin O'Roark headed a crew who painted the flooring of the deck.

The Santa Maria Valley Railroad freight depot was originally built in 1911. The depot was rebuilt in 1914 after a fire heavily damaged the original freight depot. The freight depot served as a Railway Express Agency office and depot. The Railway Express Agency was the UPS of its time where customers could send packages and parcels. The weigh scale still exists inside the freight depot.

Today the freight depot serves as the corporate offices of the Santa Maria Valley Railroad. The warehouse area serves as a display area and conference room. Also the Santa Maria Valley Railroad Company Store is located inside the warehouse area.

Thanks to Weyrick Lumber Company who donated the paint!

Next work party is scheduled to clean and scrub the walls of the freight depot next month.
