On the Job

August 11, 2007

A tractor snagged a rail at a farm crossing on the Betteravia Branch just south of Ray Road. On Saturday August 11, 2007 the SMVRR track gang spent their Saturday morning replacing rail and ties. Third generation SMVRR employee and Maintenance of Way Foreman Jesse Flores headed the job with Conductor/ Maintenance of Way worker Vince Martinez, Maintenance of Way worker Rafael Sanchez, and contract track worker Sergio.

The SMVRR is one of the few shortline railroads left that rehabilitates and maintains their track using mainly hand tools, just like they did it 94 years ago. The track gang doe it the old fashion way, with sweat and muscle and some assistance these days with a backhoe and air hammer. This talented group maintains the track at a high standard, just as high as railroads utilizing modern tools and equipment.

After years of deferred maintenance, the SMVRR track gang has spent this year replacing ties, refurbishing track bed, and reconfiguring the McClelland Street yard track.

Captain G. Allan Hancock maintained the railroad at the highest level of quality. Hancock spared no expense and the track gangs had much pride in the railroad. With the railroad maintained as such a high level of quality, later management were able to defer maintenance for many years and the railroad still maintained its structure.

The new Santa Maria Valley Railroad has made a commitment to Captain Hancock's high level of quality and pride of the railroad. By continuing to rehabilitate the railroad, the railroad will be ready for the increased business anticipated in the coming years.
